Second Semester, "Short Stories," Unit 5

M: 1/11/16- Bell work- write down 3 goals you wish to accomplish this year to make second semester more beneficial. In a quickwrite write down in complete sentences how you will accomplish these goals. (5 min.) crumble the paper up and throw it at another class mate, recieving paper of classmate will hold onto this paper till the end of the year and make note if you accomplished one or all goals. Page 28 of language arts book, "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. Read with audio tape. End on page (32). In class notes and probing questions for clarification. Classwork: (10 min.) 5 questions from notes and answer them accordingly.
 
T: 1/12/16- Bell Work- class announcements with MDG pamplet and worksheet of survey/ create prediction of the story using several words in a word bank. Students will share and review as a classs for discussion. Begin reading next four pages of MDG in language arts book with audio tape and take notes accordingly.
 
W: 1/13/16- Bell work- (15min) finish previous questions from projector and turn in to class tray after we have gone over as a class. Continue reading MDG. Handout: Suspense chart teacher will give instructions to find (4) quotes of suspense from the text and provide evidence by parphrasing how that quote is suspenseful.
 
Th: 1/14/16- Bell work- Continue reading MDG and Suspence chart
 
F: 1/15/16- Begin and finish the rest of MDG. Students will take notes accordingly of plot and need to find two more quotes from their suspense chart as we read. The remaining class period work on MDG Pamplet. Pamplet due- tuesday 1/19 (3) day weekend!
 
M: 1/18/16- MLK Day no school!
 
T: 1/19/16- Begin background notes on Edgar Allan Poe. Students will know what great works he wrote and discuss important aspects of his life which lead to his great works. Write down on notes (3) different types of irony in the story and record them as we read with textual evidence. Begin reading two pages of short story.
 
W: 1/20/16- Continue from power point and read next (2) pages of Cask of Amontillado. Students will have vocabulary checked off and begin next (3) questions for comprehension check on the back of vocabulary. Students will review types of irony found in the text as well as bellwork with our discussion of "Truth" and how that is distorted among the two main characters using a Venn diagram for textual evidence. 
 
Th: 1/21/16- Bell work: answer two questions on Cask of Amontillado. Symbolism and Dramatic irony within the short story (5 min.) and class discussion on two questions. Continue reading the rest of the short story and when finished students will write accordingly to their venn diagram and the aspect of "Truth," within the story and two characters. Need (6) bulleted items at the end of period and Cask of Amontillado questions due at the end of period as well. 
 
F: 1/22/16- Comic Strip, students will illustrate (6) main plots in the Cask of Amontillado while watching the clip of the short story. Due at the end of the period.
